They Caved

I woke up from a nap to find that the Democrats are, once again, believing Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump.

According to CNN,
The House and the Senate voted Monday to end the government shutdown, extending funding for three weeks, following a deal being reached between Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell regarding assurances related to immigration.
Jeff Flake tried to sell that same story to voters in Arizona last time they were on the brink.  I wonder how New Yorkers will feel when the promises are not kept, when the President refuses to sign what a co-equal branch of government sends him?

My guess is that they won't be as forgiving.  After all, Mr. Flake isn't running for anything (other than President) anymore.

I, meanwhile, am still feeling the pain of the worthy young people who are existing in DACA-Hell right now.  The sins of their fathers are being visited upon their heads....... it's a little Old Testament for me.

  1. I disagree and saw what the Democrats did as bad. Shut down government all you want, do a sit-in, refuse to work, start speaking in the halls about why DACA should be dealt with, but denying furloughed employees a paycheck was no way to prove this is a good cause. Think about the clerk, who was deemed non-essential but lives paycheck to paycheck if this had gone on. Why would Democrat voters not feel concern for them and only for the Democrat leaders who set up a blackmail situation. DACA should not be connected to paying the bills. The Congress that agrees to buy a plane or build a bridge should not have a right to say in six months, we won't pay as it went over budget. They didn't know that when they agreed to the raise in pay or whatever is now something they have to vote to pay for or close the doors? Grrrrrr They should all be fired.

As for the DACA immigrants, it is important that as a separate issue it is argued out how to handle this along with the question of do we have borders? This issue has been kicked down the road with each Congress refusing to handle it to keep it as maybe a political football. I am sick of the whole thing-- and on both sides. Dems are not innocent and using paying our bills as a nation as a way to deal with it was wrong and nothing to praise a Democrat Congressperson for having done-- on either side. Yes, this is a rant and you should have seen what I wrote before I deleted half of it. I'll take it to my rant blog later today! None of this is simple (budget or immigration) but for some it is-- good guy/bad guy; my tribe/their tribe!

    1. I knew I'd find you here today, Rain!
I'm disgusted with the whole thing, too. Pres Trump brought this DACA mess on himself (creating the March 5th deadline)and has no idea what he wants to do (changing his mind after meeting with Schumer). Mtich McConnell refused to bring the issue to the floor - like the proponents of the new regulations (the Gang of 8) suggested, begged, demanded. Without a hearing, there is only disaster for those living on the edge.

DACA and borders are really separate issues for me. Living near the border makes this all the more real to me; I see those kids , every day, I know that Mexico is Arizona's biggest trading partner, I see the empty parking lots at previously packed malls (malls that had 1/2 the license plates from Sonora, Mexico), I see the fear on faces.

Playing Politics instead of Practicing Governing..... GRRRRRRR!!!!
I'm going to your rant blog later to see the rest of your screed.

  2. Too bad DACA wasn't taken care of years ago. It's been cruel. So is using the budget as a weapon. I think of all those furloughed employees, like in parks, and they have no salary. Our Congress is disgusting. Whether Trump did wrong or not, Obama set up the date it would explore. Unfair to all of us and more to some of the most vulnerable

    1. Trump set the March 5th deadline, but otherwise I agree with everything you wrote. The Congress is missing the larger picture - citizens are outraged and no one in power seems to care......

  3. I was so upset when I saw that the Dems caved--including my two Senators. I'm glad CHIP has been funded for the next six years, but DACA better be resolved in the final budget deal. Otherwise, I'm going to seriously lose it. I was so angry when I saw that McConnell had put out a meme on Twitter saying it was DACA or CHIP. It doesn't have to be OR. Both should be funded and dealt with. It's beyond cruel what this administration is doing to our country. For many Dreamers, this is all they know.

And I agree borders and DACA are two entirely different issues. Deporting people who were brought here as children and this is the only country they know, is unconscionable. I will continue to fight for Dreamers.

    Sending hugs!

    1. McConnell is his own special kind of nutty, isn't he? Why anyone would trust a word that comes out of his mouth is beyond me. Schumer had the high ground, took CHIP and pushed the Dreamers down the road, and once again we have kids on the precipice.

Then, again, the marches this weekend were huge and portend an upheaval in the coming elections..... I hope.
