Random Thoughts on Politics in March

I am trying to avoid a Donald Trump post as fervently as I am trying to avoid a Donald Trump Presidency.  There's nothing I can say that hasn't been said before. I could link to Colbert or Romney or Trump himself, but why?

Daniel Hernandez, the one-week-on-the-job intern for Gabby Giffords, the man who literally held her head together in his hands while we waited for the first responders, the President of the Sunnyside School Board here in  Tucson, author, activist, and general all around great guy is running for the Arizona State Legislature.

He'd have done it sooner, but he wasn't old enough.
*****
Mitt Romney is being brought out to lead the Establishment Republican advance against Donald Trump.

I'm not sure that this is anything more than a public announcement of the paucity of viable alternatives to the current front runner.

If Ted Cruz invokes God one more time I promise to scream.

Loudly.

I've begun to inquire about Bernie Sanders and guns.

Guns in Vermont are for hunting; but in L.A. are for killing (Jul 2015) felt simplistic and self-serving until I did some research.  According to the FBI, there were 2 gun murders in Vermont in 2010; there were 1,257 in California that year.

I'm moving on to wondering about protecting manufacturers from being sued.  I'll keep you posted.

I'm glad that Ben Carson will take his many talents  and put them to better use.

If you click on the link, you'll hear him as a young pediatric neurosurgeon kvelling over the remarkable plasticity of a child's brain, as the children on whom he'd operated frolicked at a picnic around him.  All of a sudden, his calm tone feels appropriate.

I'm still trying to find something that Marco Rubio can point to as an accomplishment.

  1. What is there to say that hasn't be said, indeed. The thought of that man becoming president is just more than a body can bear. I think I've gone to the side of Clinton. It's weird, I like what Sanders is saying, but I doubt seriously if he could accomplish it. Moving an entire nation to single payer would require a motivated congress and a mandate from the people, and those things don't exist. But then Clinton will give us more of same, and I doubt if she'll do anything about the banks. We're truly off the rails. It may be time for a cat video.

    1. I'm thinking today that Bernie's enthusiastic cohort of young voters might need to be mobilized to counter the rage of the miserable, under-educated, misognistic Trumpites.

  2. Trump's health plan sounds good although I guess I mainly like letting Americans buy prescription drugs overseas if they wish. As it stands the drug companies have taken advantage of the ACA and prices of all drugs have skyrocketed. Insurance covers it for many of us but who pays for insurance.

I am still voting for Bernie. I resented how Hillary used the gun issue and Sandy Hook. To me it validated what I've believed about her-- she'll say anything. Nobody is going to take away all guns and Bernie has not been on the NRA's support list. He just isn't way out there and she used it. I don't trust her one tiny bit. BUT come November, if she's the Democratic pick, I'll be voting for her-- holding my nose all the time because everyone of them on the right is an extremist! Trump may be more of a redneck than the others but he's not worse than them-- in my opinion. I get scared at the very thought of a Cruz or Rubio with the power of the Presidency and Kasich just stopped any funding for PP in his state which is where poor women have been able to get help with medical problems. While still in college, I got my first exam and birth control prescription from them, just before getting married. A lot of women depend on them. So Kasich might smile but he's no different for his extremism.

    1. I agree, Rain. I'll hold my nose and vote for Hillary if she's the candidate. She has no scruples, is aiming high and using whatever works to get there, she's much more hawkish than I am, but, you are right, the other side is terrifying.

Where's Michael Bloomberg when I need him?

  3. Tonight (Saturday) Cruz won in Kansas so the first thing he says is, "God bless Kansas." Then he added Idaho, where he was currently standing and Maine, where he was leading. "God bless Idaho. God bless Maine." What about the other 47 states? I guess they only get blessed if he wins there.
