My America

I saw this
and I was disgusted.

I saw this response tweet from Mika
and I giggled.

Then I remembered this
and I realized that I, too, have been sucked into the morass.

I miss the Obamas and their ideals.
I'm going to try to live up to them.
After all, this is my country, the land that I love.
I won't participate in its denigration.
I'll try to keep my head up, my thoughts positive, and my energy engaged.

That's my plan, and I'm sticking to it.
On this 4th of July Weekend, I'm rededicating myself to the inclusiveness that is My America.
I'm off to buy more sweets from the Syrian ladies,
recent immigrants trying to establish themselves as bakers.
This is My America!

  1. I think it's my age, but I had a hard time when during the campaign, being a 'nasty' girl suddenly was what everybody was supposed to be proud of. I can't go there, can't like it in others, and still believe we win on responsible issues and convincing enough others that those actions are better for more Americans. Nastiness-- on either side totally turns me off-- but maybe it's my age. It just wasn't how it was supposed to be-- of course, a lot isn't...

    1. The Nasty Woman meme arose when DJT used it as an epithet. In reclaiming it for The Other Side I've felt as if I'm diminishing the hurtfulness it engendered. I'm not Nasrt, I'm Pissed.
And yes, a lot of things are not right. It's a reprise of the early 1970's with Vietnam and Cambodia and Watergate and the country's going to hell in a hand basket all over again.
I hope our democracy is as resilient today as it was then. I'm trying to stay hopeful....although the first title of this post was: Sigh

  2. I remember when he said she was a nasty woman based on her personality. People though could have let it go as his crassness. Instead, it became a badge of honor and those like Elizabeth Warren were bragging of being nasty women. When Trump got nasty with the face lift comment, Mika did go lower but she'd been doing it for awhile by saying he was insane etc. He's not someone to admire but she went too far with insane as she has no way to know that. I don't watch their show, never have, so can't say what she's like on it. The few times I've seen clips of her arguing with Joe, before their affair, she did seem nasty and maybe to some that is strength. Just not my age group.

    1. I don't watch them either...just that morning to see the response, which I thought was feeble. Do you think DJT's misogyny is a reflection of his age group, too? Unused to strong women? Unable to see it as anything other than an expression of equality? It's a big gap , historic and socially, between his 71 and my 65,

    2. Is it misogyny or just the idea that men have a right to take what they want? There is a difference and would explain why he can have women in power positions and also think he could grab what he wanted. He is very oriented toward women being beautiful as objects to admire and put on pedestals also. I think the media labels that all misogyny but not sure it's about hatred of women but more an attitude of male superiority. It wasn't remotely true of all men though in that age bracket-- I'm married to one. Since I have male friends in your age bracket and much younger and some of them also have the right to grab and others the respect for women. Maybe more than age, it's how we were raised. Men raised to think grabbing is a right, like JFK or Clinton, often didn't have positive father role models!

    3. Not of all men, of course. I have lots of them in my circle and they are as appalled at his behavior as you and I. I thik the power piece has to include a demeaning piece, too; you don't wield power dismissively over someone (or a class of someones)
      you respect.

I don't know much about DJT's childhood, but I can't imagine his dad was someone I'd like to know :-)
