Feeling Old

I met my new physician today.  She's lovely.  The office was COVID protected in every way.  I left feeling secure in my future medical care.

I also felt old.

We talked about bone density, and my reluctance to take another medication.

We talked about blood pressure, and my reluctance to take another medication.

We talked about falling and low sodium diets.

We talked about longevity and my end of life planning.

It was a comprehensive review of all the ways my body could fail me.  It was sobering.  I've been coming to terms with the whole more-behind-me-than-in-front-of-me scenario for a while.  This afternoon, it was brought front and center.

I'm very glad to be here to have the conversation.  I'm not that glad to be thinking about all that has and could go wrong.

  1. I get that feeling regularly-- not surprising given my age. Worse, I have to find a new doctor for down here as with our son living at the farm, my regular primary care is not looking very practical. We did a virtual visit in September which worked but can't be permanent. I have no idea how to start since we haven't changed clinics in over 40 years. More complicated is with the new health rules, not all clinics take all supplemental insurance. I so (don't) love limiting regulations

    1. If you want to drive up here, my new doctor is still taking patients. Looking for a doctor is so hard; almost as hard as getting a vaccine.

  2. My doctor retired last June and I have a new, young and perky PCP. That makes me feel old in itself. But I sure do relate to to the rest of your post as well.

    1. G'ma always said that we should get doctors who were much younger than we so that they didn't retire just when we needed them. This new doc is young and perky, too. Maybe that is part of my issue.

  3. My PCP who is just delightful, has broached the subject of bisphosphonates for my stable osteopenia. I just don't want to.
Dead jaw scares me to death, as do the weird femur fractures. Nope, nope, nope. She's young, and hopefully I will not have to find another doctor, plus I like her NPs. She did give me the end of life thing to fill out, which I promptly put in a drawer and forgot about.

    1. My doctor said that this was a rare event and they have new protocols including a Medication Holiday - take it for 3 years, off for 1 - that take care of that problem. That was why I resisted.
And now - DO THE END OF LIFE PAPERWORK RIGHT NOW!!
