The sun came out. There are still clouds in the sky, but for the two hours I was at Prince, there was no rain. I stopped at Rillito Nursery for onion sets and conversation and another donation of seeds. It takes a village to raise the next generation; I'm lucky to have the nursery in my corner.
The onions were easy to plant. A trench was created, the individual plants carefully placed and then tucked in so they stood upright.
Deciding where they should go was a group effort.
Lettuce and cauliflower and cilantro starts were also easy to plant.
The Trait of the Month for January is Collaboration. Giving instructions to a classmate is one of the tasks for our Garden Leaders. There's a lot to be learned about how deep and how wide and how close to others the hole should be. Watching those who were once clueless sharing their knowledge with their friends makes my heart soar.
By the end of recess, the bed was filled with arugula and cilantro and those onions.
There are strawberries in one of the buckets on the fence, and some mint in another. With a little more than three months left in the school year, seeds would only be aspirational. With this early start, we should have salad to munch on until it's time to say goodbye for the summer.
Absolutely fabulous.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow the kindergarten will get their own tiny onion/scallion plant to take home in Chobani yogurt containers with the labels pulled off. I'm having such a good time!

Facillitating children's learning gives such a reward for the effort.
