Being Not Tall - A Snippet

The manufactured world is designed for those who are almost-tall and those who are taller.

I make accommodations.  There are step stools in every closet, and nothing that's necessary is stored up there anyway.  There are shelves that peer down at me, imperiously, daring me to reach their heights.

Today, I was confronted with an exercise in Pilates that tested me.  The teacher and my classmates are blessed with long limbs which formed a lovely downward angle from their hips when lifted onto the top of the chair.

My leg, when extended on the same piece of equipment, was unhappily tilted up at an awkward angle.

It didn't feel dangerous.  It just wasn't what the teacher was asking us to do.

Channeling my mother, I thought as long as I'm us here as I moved in a way congruent with my situation.

Making lemonade out of lemons.  Embracing the new year with lighthearted energy.  Bringing G'ma along for the ride.

  1. Through all of elementary school I was the second tallest person in my class. I stopped growing at 5'6" when the rest of the gang apparently all had growth spurts. I think that's how I got a distorted body image where I think I am very tall.
