What To Do?

A friend and I exchanged a series of emails about the Hamas/Israel situation.  We are bereft.

The conflict will, no doubt, be a foundational myth for all concerned for generations to come.  Where could we put our faith, our hope?

I remembered President Obama holding my hands in the hospital when I asked him the same thing.  Look to our better angels.  This is not what Americans are or want to be.

As I listen to Republican leaders lie as they blame President Biden for funding this terror  instead of calling out the anti-Semitism which is driving it, instead of recoiling at the barbarity of beheading babies, I know not to look for a united American response.

She agreed that the search will not be easy.  We agreed that it seems like a sensible way to try to get through the storm.  Then she sent me this.

I hope she helps.

  2. The other side of angels is where we are-- evil. Some hate that word. I know from my friends, but no other word works for me with what we saw this week-end. Horrifyingly for me-- on my birthday when I turned 80. I day that has become evil in my mind after years when it was just my birthday.

  3. This is a war that has been waged for the ages, and now boils over again. Hubris in leadership and abuse of power in Israel have opened them up to attack, while oppression in Gaza has unleashed the cruelty and anger raging in the oppressed. The resulting bloodbath will be felt most heavily on the innocent. And the world mourns and watched for the repercussions.

    1. Hamas's goal is the elimination of the Jews. I'm not sure Israel's behavior (with which I take issue) has much to do with that.

  4. There is no upside to war. And what is the point when both sides want to raise their children and enjoy time with family and friends in peace? Why can't world leaders get behind that simple idea and work differences out humanely?
