Tough

Hi there Burrow faithful,

Little Cuter here, with news on my amazing mom.

As most of you probably know by now, my mom attended the Congress on your Corner event yesterday at her local Safeway. Just as she reached the front of the line to shake Ms. Gifford's hand a gunman appeared and began shooting with an automatic weapon. My mom was shot three times.

That's a sentence I never thought I'd have to type.

Right this very minute my mom is in the ICU with her leg in a traction. She suffered a wound to her left chest, one to her abdomen, and a third to her right hip. She is incredibly lucky that none of her organs were hit, even though one of the bullet's entry wounds was in her abdomen. She has been taken care of by some fantastic and proficient doctors and nurses, and a wonderful social work team.

My mom is the toughest broad I've ever met. She is awake and talking and cracking wise and we can all rest assured that the woman we love is still here, kicking major ass.

To all of you who have reached out already: I love you. Your thoughts have honestly been felt even if they were from many states away. The amount of love we are receiving is staggering, and we are incredibly thankful for all of you. Please continue to send out your best "healing vibes" (as we like to call them) and "special strength vibes" for the moments when we will be reaching in to our reserve tanks.

Love,
Little Cuter

UPDATE 1.11.11 5:08pm

To all of you who have reached out in the past few days, we are gob-smacked. The amount of love and prayers we have received are completely mind blowing, and we are so incredibly grateful.Thank you.

I have only positive news to report. Mom made it through her final surgery beautifully. Her surgery was long, it lasted about five hours, but the second she woke up the doctors were able to remove her breathing tube, she is moving oxygen perfectly, and everything looks good from here on out. We have a lot of physical and emotional work to do, but hopefully the hardest of all of this is behind us.

I would like to extend thanks from my family to all of the amazing doctors, nurses, social workers, US Attorney's Representatives, and FBI representatives that we have encountered in the last few days. We have had one exceptional experience after another and feel completely taken care of from all angles, even ones we wouldn't have thought of without their help.

I hope everyone who reads this knows how grateful we are to you as well. Each one of you individually has provided a moment of peace and joy to our family through your outreach, and we could not be more appreciative.

When her strength returns, I know my mom has a lot to share with you all. Even through her haze she has been asking me to take notes for her posts so that she doesn't miss any of the details. This community is so important to her, and the outreach we have experienced from you all has just solidified that my mom is part of a generous, thoughtful, caring, international family here. It is truly a beautiful thing.

Now please, go hug those you love extra tight.

xoxo,
Little Cuter

Little Cuter, here from Time Goes By blog. Like all others here, I was shocked to hear of one of "our own" being part of the tragedy in Arizona.

I had to laugh, though, with your descriptions of your mom still able to "kick ass" even with one leg in traction.

It's that kind of toughness that will get you all through this.

Many hugs to you all.

Hi Little Cuter,
Sorry to be cryptic. Please tell your mom that the person with the same birthday as her wedding date is thinking of her. So is her husband. I'm sure she'll understand and appreciate our concern. I've known her long enough to expect courage and strength, and would expect nothing less than witty moments from her whenever possible!
Love to you and your entire family.

The blogger who signs her comments 'whaddayamean' (who commented above, on the first page of comments) may live in NYC but has Tucson ties. She's holding an online contest you may be interested in, to foster some 'love for Arizona.' Prizes include a case of Poblano hot sauce (made in Tucson for almost 70 years) and two books by Tucson authors.

Details here.

Please recover fully! I hope it will help you to know that, when my late mother's hip shattered at age 80 (no guns, just fell), they were able to pin things together and she regained her ability to walk, despite other medical complications. A doctor who saw her years later was stunned at how well she recovered. So I hope you're dancing with your Youngers on your next birthday!

I am so very sorry that your Mom was one of the victims of this horrible tragedy. I am, however, so glad that no vital organs were hit.

I live in Tucson and found out about your Mom through "Time Goes By", where I have read her many comments. I was not at the meeting due to physical restrictions, but I am an admirer of Gabby. Thankfully, Gabby is alive, but it is looking doubtful that she will be able to continue her political career for a long time.
We have lost one of the greatest Senators Arizona ever had.

If there is anything I can do, please call. I am listed in the Tucson directory under Costner, D. I am sending healing thoughts to your Mom and hope to meet her someday.

So sorry you were shot, Ashleigh! My good friend, Pam Simon, an aide to Gabby, also was shot and miraculously the bullet went from chest to hip without causing major damage. Not sure if I believe in angels, but it seems that if they exist, they were busy on Saturday with you, Gabby and pam. So so sad about those not so fortunate, though.

Love your blog and will follow it, I'm a lonely liberal in Phoenix. ("Lonely" because I just moved here a year ago and am still finding my niche....)

Wishing you and your family strength and your mother a full recovery...so sorry for all involved. We need a public awareness campaign along the lines of "If you see something, say something" to make people more aware of the signs of serious mental illness. People need to know what to do, how to act, when someone they encounter at work, in school or in their community needs help. After Virginia Tech, and all these other shootings we keep hearing of clear warning signs that something was not right. That and access to weapons is a huge, huge issue that we need to address. With 90 guns for every 100 people in this country and 1 in 4 Americans suffering at some point from mental health issues we have a big, big problem that needs to be addressed!

Little Cuter, while I haven't had the pleasure yet of meeting your mom in the Land of Blog, I read about this in a post on another blog and wanted to come by to add my prayers and good wishes to the list.

I have been heartsick ever since I first saw this on the news, and I pray that your mother and the others will make a full recovery. I also pray for the families of the dead that the Lord will hold them especially close to His heart now and in the days ahead. While I don't know any of them personally, my heart grieves along with their hearts. I also pray for the families of the wounded.

I'm so glad to hear your report that your mom is doing well, and I pray that she will have a speedy recovery. I, too, am impressed with the doctors we've seen interviewed. They have been amazing in their willingness to update the country. And I stand in awe of the bravery that occurred from bystanders who selflessly stepped in the gap and made sure that no more carnage was inflicted by the gunman that day.

Mr. Magpie joins me in sending you and your family hugs from Florida. God bless you...

XO,

Sheila (Mrs. Magpie) :-)

My thoughts and prayers are with your Mom and your family. I hope she will have a full and complete recovery. I lost my Dad when I was a teenager in a tragic way because of a deranged co-worker, so I know the shock and fear you are going through. I'm so glad that so many have reached out to give you comfort and I hope your Mom will be back to blog someday and help others by sharing her story. My best wishes to you all! (((hugs)))

All the best to your dear mother and you and yours. I can' imagine how difficult this must be for you all. I only hope that some good will come of this terrible tragedy. Perhaps the eyes of our national conscience will be opened. I pray for this, for your mother and for all the victims of last weeks tragedy.

I have family in Tucson and have spent a few happy days there over the years. It is a great town.

May your mother heal rapidly and have her life restored to normalcy as soon as possible.

Best regards...

I am so sorry to hear that your mom was one of the victims, but it is amazing to think that you are picking up where she left off, calling her accolades out loud, and sharing your love via this blog. I hope she not only fully recovers her strength, but also that she continues to share her special gifts with the world. Let's not let violence deter us... lest we make the mistake of silence. Let's protest the craziness of a world where immature adults can get guns, and offer bullets, instead of discussion and collaboration. Wishing a full recovery, and would also love to know where to mail notes of sympathy for all the victims.. the hospital? the mayor's office? the newspaper? how do you find that stuff out?

i've been blogging all week from my desk in my typically small nyc apt (a setting which couldn't be different, i imagine, from yours in arizona) following all the details of the tucson event with horror and sadness and all the time not knowing that one of my own was wounded.

i'd never seen these pages until today, but im a blogher too, and maybe we passed each other in the hall at blogher 10 or even if we didnt it feels like we are linked. i feel so grateful you are recovering well. i'm also very moved at the commitment you show to the work you do here that you are thinking of your blog community even now. many thanks to Little Cuter for carrying the torch until you're back on the job.
